Patrul Rinpoche’s Advice on the Key Points of Dharma Practice, Explained by Lama Tsering Phuntsok.

 

This passage was spoken by Patrul Rinpoche, and it’s excellent, so I will translate it for you!

For the Gyalrong people, Garwang and others, who know little but have faith, here are some key instructions on how to practice Dharma.

The place Gyalrong is now called Ngawa Prefecture. A Tibetan named Garwang from Gyalrong went to see Patrul Rinpoche along with some friends. Patrul Rinpoche gave the following teaching.

For the Gyalrong people Garwang and others who know little but have faith, here are some key instructions on how to practice Dharma.

 

Why are there people who wish to learn Dharma, but fail to practice it according to its teachings?

The reason is that they haven’t made a firm resolution within their hearts, so they are unsuccessful.

Patrul Rinpoche to a certain venerable monk

This passage is from a letter written by Patrul Rinpoche to a certain monk. As for who the venerable monk is, we don’t know.

Patrul Rinpoche was a very renowned teacher at his time. During that era, people tended to chase after famous individuals. This monk was also in pursuit of a well-known teacher, rather than a truly wise one. His mindset was incorrect; he was looking for a master with fame not realization. Because of this, Patrul Rinpoche wrote this letter to him.

Patrul Rinpoche to a certain venerable monk:

Since my youth, I have encountered the Dharma, taken refuge, studied, and practiced various sutras and treatises. However, due to my vile nature and deep-seated habits, I have repeatedly violated the Pratimokṣa vows and the Vajrayana samayas.

Though I have diligently practiced in this life, my mind has never even attained the samadhi of the desire realm, and my accomplishments in the three trainings of discipline, concentration, and wisdom remain vastly deficient.

Visualization Practice for Your Recitations of the Six-Syllable Mantra

When reciting the Six-Syllable Mantra in your routine, first view yourself as Avalokiteshvara holding a pure vase.

Then perceive ten Avalokiteshvaras appearing in the ten directions of east, south, west, north, above, below, and so on. Just like that, the number of Avalokiteshvaras gradually increases until they fill the entirety of space.

 

Each sentient being has one Avalokiteshvara appearing in front of them holding a pure vase. After that, the nectar water flows from the pure vase, eliminating the sufferings of hell beings in the eight cold and eight hot hells, the sufferings of hungry ghosts with hunger, thirst and the three obstacles, the sufferings of animals eating each other and being in bondage, the sufferings of humans with birth, aging, sickness and death, the sufferings of asuras with fighting, anger and jealousy, and the sufferings of heavenly beings with the five signs of decay.

Annotation for Guru Rinpoche’s Heart Mantra

“Om,” the ultimate mark of the bodies of the Buddhas. “Ah,” the unobstructed sound of mantras turning. “Hum,” the realization of all phenomena as one-suchness. “Vajra,” the Vajradhara of body, speech, and mind. “Guru,” the symbol of non-duality with the deities. “Padma,” the manifestation of saving the three realms. “Siddhi,” the attainment of all accomplishments. “Hum” integrates all blessings into oneself.

I see all aspects of the guru as Buddha, With such intense faith overflowing, And I pray and I pray and I supplicate That you bless me with the lineage of the secret mind!

Keeping Your Mind Unmoved Is the Greatest Obstacle Remover

Our biggest obstacle is our attachment, so don’t think too much. Only then will your mind get a bit more peaceful. Chanting, chanting, what are you chanting for? The main thing is to have a peaceful mind.

 

All problems are not brought by others; they are sought and thought up by ourselves. Knowing this, there’s nothing much to worry about. If you have no thoughts, whatever happens in the external environment has nothing to do with you. Just hearing a noise outside and you think it’s a ghost? Doesn’t that make you confused for the rest of your life? When your mind can remain unmoving no matter how loud or noisy all the outside sounds are, that’s the greatest removal of obstacles!
