His Holiness GURU CHOKTRUL Calligraphy Exhibition

Born in 1966, His Holiness, Guru Choktrul, is the reincarnate trulku of the Lord of Refuge, Kyabje Thubten Chokyi Dawa Rinpoche, who was widely revered in Tibet as the “wish fulfilling jewel”.

From early on in life, His Holiness was nurtured at Namdroling Monastery under the personal guidance of His Holiness Penor Rinpoche, the head of the Nyingma school.

Even at a young age, His Holiness displayed extraordinary wisdom, mastering both the exoteric and esoteric Buddhist teachings with seemingly no effort, and accomplished many great attainments such as directly perceiving the deities Dorje Drollo and Vajrakilaya. His Holiness is currently one of the few lineage holders of the Great Perfection teachings.

Responding to numerous requests from the Chinese community, His Holiness will hold a calligraphy exhibition in Vancouver, Canada, in September of this year. The exhibition, titled “Fantasy,” warmly invites everyone to attend and offer their insights.

At the age of 14, His Holiness demonstrated his talents by serving on the monastery management committee and undertaking monastery affairs.

At the age of 17, His Holiness founded the “Monlam Chenmo Great Prayer Festival” in Bodh Gaya, the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment, with the aim of praying for world peace. This has become an annual event for numerous organizations in the Buddhist community.

In 1987, His Holiness traveled to Taiwan to preside over the cremation ceremony of the high monk Jampal Lodoe Rinpoche and has since been residing in Taiwan for the past 36 years, occasionally traveling to mainland China and Europe to propagate Buddhist teachings and give aid to countless disciples who chanced upon him.

His Holiness has a wide range of interests, including calligraphy, painting, sculpture, tea tasting, and collecting unique stones, and has a particular fondness for Chinese calligraphy.

In his youth, His Holiness was closely associated with Master Fang Xingren, a disciple of Yu Youren, a giant in the world of Chinese calligraphy.

Although His Holiness does not read Chinese, he greatly appreciates the “meaning” and “charm” of Chinese characters.

Years of meditation and realization of the primordial purity of mind in the Great Perfection have given His Holiness a deep understanding and unique perspective on the five qualities of calligraphy: “divine, sublime, easy, crafty, and fine.”

In addition, His Holiness incorporated the art of Tibetan calligraphy into his own unique style, resulting in an expression of free reining and powerful strokes, while not straying away from the blessings of compassion, wisdom and strength of the Buddhadharma.

His Holiness’s unparalleled strength of meditative equipoise allows his every brush stroke to be infused with his limitless aspirations.

If one connects with His Holiness’s work in serenity, it will be as though one can see the entire universe in a sesame seed, and three thousand realms in one stroke, a symphony of charm, aged elegance, dashingness, and a heart to heart connection in the midst of wayward grandeur.
