That one cannot fall asleep while thinking of the suffering of reincarnation and the cause and effect of karma can be regarded as reaching a high standard of renunciation.
That one would often weep while thinking of the kindness of the guru can be regarded as reaching a high standard of belief.
That one would often cry while thinking of the pain experienced by sentient beings who used to be one’s parents can be regarded as reaching a high standard of compassion.
If this is not achieved, the religious practice is just like to scratch an itch from the outside of the boot, which is useless. Please think about it.
