Telling the Truth

說實話

Everyone agrees that one should tell the truth, but when truth is told, one ends up criticizing others in all likelihood. Therefore, what is important is not the telling of the truth but the character of the person telling the truth.

If the person telling the truth is motivated by greed, hatred or ignorance, especially jealousy, then telling the truth will not only hurt others but it will also make the listener resentful.

Similarly, if the person telling the truth is not motivated by greed, hatred, ignorance or jealousy, then people will be very receptive when they hear the truth. The truth would feel relevant to them, arousing in them a profound sense of guilt and hence they would be glad to accept it.
