Even a Butcher Must Remember to Chant Buddha’s Name

Even if your livelihood depends on slaughtering, stealing, robbery, swindling, cheating, prostitution, loan-sharking, murder, arson and so on, you shall still chant Buddha’s name.

Buddhist disciples would often consider the above-mentioned individuals as people who commit serious misdeeds and suffer from heavy karmic obstacles that it is just futile for them to chant Buddha’s name. They would also even point fingers at these individuals. These kinds of behaviors are so wrong. As Buddhists, it would be best if we can try to persuade these individuals to change their ways of making a living, if not, we should at least advise them and encourage them as much as we can, in chanting Buddha’s name. Although they have committed misdeeds, but if they can chant Buddha’s name, it would at least mitigate their karmic sins, and this is precisely the merit of chanting Buddha’s name.

We often have the misconception that: chanting Buddha’s name only works for people who conduct good deeds and will not work for those who conduct evil deeds. This is incorrect. So long as you chant with sincerity and devotion, chanting Buddha’s name works for everyone and all.

I urge you to ponder on the thoughts mentioned above.
